Muay Thai History

Thai Boxing National Sport

Muay Thai means “The Art of Eight Limbs”; it uses eight points of contact.

The hands become the sword & dagger the shins and forearms are hardened in training to help protect the fighter like armor would, deflecting the blows as they come in.

The knees and elbows are all the time probing the opponent the elbow is used to like a heavy mace while the legs and knees are likened to the axe and staff.

The body is operated as one unit. The knees and elbows constantly searching and testing for an opening while grappling is also allowed to a point and spinning an enemy to the ground for the kill is allowed.

Muay Thai dates back to ancient times, while under the rule of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1868 it really became very popular.

During the reign of Rama 9, Thai Boxing Muay Thai progressed rapidly. The King himself had a very strong affection for the sport. He wanted the sport to be the national sport of the country and he endeavored for all participants to become masters.

The King thought said it would be beneficial for the country to have such rigorous exercise and at the same time as learning how to master the art and defend and protect themselves too.

The king also thought it would teach them respect not only for themselves each other too including personal advancement and true discipline.

During the reign of Rama 9 he the King authorized that Muay Thai training camps be set up throughout the country. Students, from all walks of life, could go and learn the ancient arts from the masters.

The student would be fed and watered and given a place to lay their head. All students, no matter what their social standing all fighters were treated the same.

They were all treated like one big family, and they would usually adopt the training camps name as their own a practice which is still very common today.

Even today, up and down the country there are uncountable boxing gyms which offer courses on Muay Thai Kick Boxing.
